Orthopaedic Research

By stimulating and sponsoring appropriate orthopaedic research we initiate the development of new ideas and approaches to sports medicine. Recent structural changes in the U.S. medical system are forcing physicians and hospitals to strive to identify the most effective treatment pathways and offer these treatments to their patients, rather than allow managed care to dictate the decision making process. This can be accomplished through research efforts designed to explore and enhance the quality and efficiency of the care provided and to validate the need for certain treatment pathways for special populations, such as those sustaining sports injuries. Our ongoing research projects are changing how orthopaedic care is delivered throughout the world.

Accolades

Congratulations to Dr. Tom Pevny for his recent poster presentation at the AANA annual meeting this past May in Hollywood, FL entitled “Comparison of Four Femoral Tunnel Drilling Techniques in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction”.  This paper is also being reviewed by The Journal of Arthroscopy.

Congratulations to MARS surgeons Dr. Mark Purnell and Dr. Lindsay Harris. The manuscript entitled “Descriptive Epidemiology of the Multi-Center ACL Revision Study (MARS) Cohort” has been accepted for publication by AJSM.

Ongoing Research

Effects of a Femoral Nerve Block On Pain Management After Intramedullary Tibial Nailing
The purpose of this study is to evaluate FNB as a supplement to the standard pain protocol for postoperative pain control. Our hypothesis is that a preemptive FNB will improve pain control and decrease the total opioid usage for patients undergoing IM nailing for acute tibia fractures.

The PCL and Its Surrounding Bony Topography
by Mark Purnell, MD
After successful published studies on the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and its surrounding bony landmarks and topography, we are now focusing on the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL).

Congratulations to Andrew I. Larson, B.S.M.E. and Fellow Alumni Daniel P. Bullock, M.D. of the Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation and Tomas Pevny, M.D. of Aspen Orthopaedic Associates.
In the July 2012 editions of Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery they published a research paper titled, “Comparison of 4 Femoral Tunnel Drilling Techniques in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction”.

Research on Rabbits Leads to New Treatments for Humans
Congratulations to N. Lindsay Harris, MD, Eleanor von Stade, MD, Mark Purnell, MD of Aspen Orthopaedic Associates and Andrew Larson, BSME, the Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation, Director of Research.

In the May 2012 edition of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery they published a research paper titled "The Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma on Normal Soft Tissue in the Rabbit".
This important research investigates platelet-rich plasma which is reported to contain multiple growth factors, and has been utilized in orthopaedic surgery to aid healing in humans.
