Fellowship Information

The Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation (ASMF) facilitates an academic orthopaedic sports medicine and trauma surgery fellowship following the strict guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the federal council which reviews all fellowships in medicine and surgery. This is of significance to our applicants due to the fact that the American Board of Medical Subspecialties approved a subspecialty certification in orthopaedic sports medicine in March of 2003. Only those Fellows graduating from an accredited program will be allowed to sit for this subspecialty exam.

Beginning each year on August 1st through July 31st our fellowship is a combined effort between Aspen Orthopaedic Associates, The Aspen Sports Medicine Foundaiton and Aspen Valley Hospital. Two of the world’s brightest new orthopaedic surgeons are selected from the world’s most prestigious orthopaedic residency programs to spend one year in subspecialty orthopaedic training. A fellow is a board-eligible orthopaedic surgeon who has completed a five-year orthopaedic surgery residency program and has elected to spend an additional year of subspecialty training in sports medicine. The fellows learn specialized assessment and diagnostic techniques, surgical procedures, and emergency care of orthopaedic injuries from a comprehensive curriculum we have developed. The ASMF fellows serve our local community by volunteering for World Cup skiing events, high school varsity sports, community health fairs and providing free community lectures on various topics like injury prevention.

Since ASMF began in 1978, we have had more than 60 physicians successfully complete our program. The ASMF Fellows learn specialized surgical procedures, assessment and diagnostic techniques and emergency care of orthopaedic injuries. Research is a major focus of the fellowship program and findings are presented at regular orthopaedic grand rounds at Aspen Valley Hospital as well as at national and international orthopaedic conferences. Aspen offers an exciting and challenging experience for our Fellows because of our very active local and visiting population, our large skiing community, and the wide variety of athletic events we cover including: high school varsity athletics, world cup skiing and NORBA mountain bike races. We have developed a unique and comprehensive teaching curriculum for sports medicine and sports trauma consisting of didactic lectures, weekly x-ray conference, journal club, audio-visual training, hands-on cadaver dissections, as well as an extensive clinical experience.

Our Fellows Receive
A salary of $50,000.00
Benefits (after one month)
$40.00 monthly cell phone allowance
Two weeks of paid vacation
Two day a week season ski pass for the four Aspen Skiing Company ski areas
Two bedroom apartment to rent (no pets allowed) with highly subsidized rent and utilities.
